PROSE ASSIGNMENT

1. Some similarities between Roger and Vicky:
 Roger is the same youth as Vicky. They are about fourteen or fifteen years old.
 The problem of the story is same. It is about stealing.
Some differences between Roger and Vicky.
 Physically; Vicky is a girl but Roger is a boy.
 Vicky studies in a school but Roger doesn’t.
 Vicky steals because of having kleptomania sickness but Roger steals because he wants a pair of blue suede shoes.
 Vicky used to steal in shop but Roger snatch a purse (it is Mrs. Jones’ purse)
 Vicky used to steal/take something in the shop without known by anyone but Roger takes/steals something by snatching.
2. Vicky, in my point of view, is quite different than Roger. As we know after reading the story of “Thank you, Ma’m” that Roger felt regret of doing such a thing (snatching Mrs. Jones’ purse), moreover Roger knows how kind-hearted Mrs. Jones is, since stealing or snatching is actually not his job/habit. It is so different from Vicky who used to steal because of having kleptomania sickness. Based on my viewpoint, Vicky won’t do such what Roger did. Roger tells frankly why he snatches the purse. It is because he just wants a pair of blue suede shoes. Nevertheless, Vicky won’t admit what he does and why the reason is, such it happened in “The Quickening” short story that he didn’t tell the truth when Miss Olafson asked whether she takes something in the shop or not.
3. Shoplifting is someone whose work is stealing in shop. however kleptomania is someone who is used to stealing in the shop but it is not his/her job. Kleptomania is also a kind of sickness which psychologically causes/forces him/her to steal when he/she has a chance.
Vicky, in my point of view is kleptomania. It is supported with the sentences in the story when it is said that Vicky feels a certain exhilaration grow inside him, a familiar quickening of the pulse, the heart and the senses.
